The Education of Taste

The claim, shared across the wiki's sources, that taste is acquired through attention, not given at birth.

Across its sources the wiki holds that taste is not a birthright but an achievement. The Aesthetics of Music describes the ear as made, not given — formed by years of attentive listening. Beauty describes taste as an educational achievement, acquired through the discipline of returning to what rewards close examination. A Guide to Elegance assumes the same of dress: the eye that knows what suits is the eye that has practised. And On Beauty and Being Just supplies the faculty beneath all of them — Attention, the willingness to be stopped by a thing and let it speak on its own terms.

Why It Matters

If taste is an education, the right question is never simply do I like this? but have I attended to it long enough to know? This is why the wiki treats its disciplines — of the wardrobe, the room, the ear — as forms of Judgement in training, and why it grows slowly: the faculty cannot be hurried.
